Packet: 20 seeds
Planting at a glance
- Season: Warm season
- Start: Direct sow in warm soil, or start in individual cells about 4–5 weeks before planting out
- Seed depth: ½–1 inch when direct sown
- Germination: Allow about 7–14 days in warm conditions; cold soil delays sprouting
- Final spacing: Thin to about 12–18 inches; rows about 36 inches apart
- Light: Full sun
- Harvest planning: Typical crop window: 60–70 days from direct sowing
When to plant
Plant outdoors after frost danger passes and the soil has warmed. In short-season areas, count back from your intended outdoor planting date for indoor starts. South Florida has warm-season windows in January–March and August–October.
How to plant
- Prepare loose, well-drained soil or a clean seed-starting mix. Direct sow in warm soil, or start in individual cells about 4–5 weeks before planting out.
- Sow ½–1 inch when direct sown deep. Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Then water when the soil needs it, allowing excess water to drain.
- Thin or transplant to the listed final spacing. Give seedlings sufficient light and check moisture as roots establish.
How to harvest
Check pods often and clip them while tender. Oversized pods can toughen rapidly.
Aunt E’s tip: Wear gloves and sleeves if the plant hairs irritate your skin.
Growing notes and sources
Timing is a planning range, not a guaranteed harvest date. Temperature, moisture, variety and season affect the result. Count from the sowing or transplanting point stated above.
