Salt and Pepper Cucumber (Organic) Heirloom Seeds
Salt and Pepper grows pale-skinned pickling cucumbers with dark spines. Pick small for crisp slices and use a tested recipe when preserving them.
Packet: 20 seeds
Planting at a glance
- Season: Warm season
- Start: Direct sow, or start individual cells about 3–4 weeks before transplanting
- Seed depth: ½–¾ inch
- Germination: Usually 3–10 days around 75–80°F
- Final spacing: Allow about 12 inches on a trellis, or more space for vines spreading over the soil
- Light: Full sun
- Harvest planning: Typical crop window: 40–65 days from direct sowing
When to plant
Plant outdoors after frost danger passes and the soil has warmed. In short-season areas, count back from your intended outdoor planting date for indoor starts. South Florida outdoor window: September–February.
How to plant
- Prepare loose, well-drained soil or a clean seed-starting mix. Direct sow, or start individual cells about 3–4 weeks before transplanting.
- Sow ½–¾ inch deep. Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Then water when the soil needs it, allowing excess water to drain.
- Thin or transplant to the listed final spacing. Give seedlings sufficient light and check moisture as roots establish.
How to harvest
Pick fruit at the variety’s useful eating size while skin and seeds remain tender. Check vines regularly.
Aunt E’s tip: A trellis saves ground space, but it does not remove the need for light, root room and steady moisture.
Growing notes and sources
Timing is a planning range, not a guaranteed harvest date. Temperature, moisture, variety and season affect the result. Count from the sowing or transplanting point stated above.

Seed light and growing light: Cover these seeds at the depth on this listing; they do not need surface light to germinate. After sprouting, the leaves need good growing light.
