Red Malabar spinach is a climbing green for summer heat. Its thick leaves add body to soups and stews.

Packet: 15+ seeds

Planting at a glance

  • Season: Warm season; climbing leafy crop
  • Start: Direct sow in warm soil, or start in individual cells
  • Seed depth: ¼ inch
  • Germination: Can take about 10–21 days in warm conditions; hard-coated seeds may take longer
  • Final spacing: Allow about 12 inches beside a sturdy trellis
  • Light: Full sun
  • Harvest planning: Pick leaves once vines are established and growing strongly; it is a repeated leaf crop

When to plant

Plant outdoors after frost danger passes and the soil has warmed. In short-season areas, count back from your intended outdoor planting date for indoor starts.

How to plant

  1. Prepare loose, well-drained soil or a clean seed-starting mix. Direct sow in warm soil, or start in individual cells.
  2. Sow ¼ inch deep. Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Then water when the soil needs it, allowing excess water to drain.
  3. Thin or transplant to the listed final spacing. Give seedlings sufficient light and check moisture as roots establish.

How to harvest

Pick tender leaves and shoots while leaving enough foliage for continued growth.

Aunt E’s tip: Set up the trellis before the vines need it; Malabar spinach climbs.

Growing notes and sources

Timing is a planning range, not a guaranteed harvest date. Temperature, moisture, variety and season affect the result. Count from the sowing or transplanting point stated above.
