Gold Nugget Winter Squash Seeds
Gold Nugget brings small, pumpkin-like winter squash to the garden. Its compact habit makes it useful where sprawling vines would crowd the bed. Let the rind mature before harvesting fruit for roasting or baking.
Packet: 8 seeds
Planting at a glance
- Season: Warm season
- Start: Direct sow, or start individual cells about 3–4 weeks before transplanting
- Seed depth: 1–1½ inches
- Germination: Usually 5–10 days around 75–80°F
- Final spacing: Allow about 36–60 inches for vining plants; compact varieties still need their documented footprint
- Light: Full sun
- Harvest planning: Typical crop window: 85–120 days from direct sowing
When to plant
Plant outdoors after frost danger passes and the soil has warmed. In short-season areas, count back from your intended outdoor planting date for indoor starts. South Florida outdoor window: August–March.
How to plant
- Prepare loose, well-drained soil or a clean seed-starting mix. Direct sow, or start individual cells about 3–4 weeks before transplanting.
- Sow 1–1½ inches deep. Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Then water when the soil needs it, allowing excess water to drain.
- Thin or transplant to the listed final spacing. Give seedlings sufficient light and check moisture as roots establish.
How to harvest
Let fruit develop mature rind and a firm stem before cutting. Cure and store according to the variety.
Aunt E’s tip: Use the mature-rind cue for winter squash, rather than the tender-fruit cue used for zucchini.
Growing notes and sources
Timing is a planning range, not a guaranteed harvest date. Temperature, moisture, variety and season affect the result. Count from the sowing or transplanting point stated above.
