Planting at a glance

  • Season: Cool season
  • Start: Direct sow
  • Seed depth: ¼ inch
  • Germination: Usually 3–4 days in a moist seedbed around 55–75°F
  • Final spacing: Thin small garden radishes to about 1–2 inches; rows 6–12 inches apart
  • Light: Full sun
  • Harvest planning: Small garden radishes commonly take 20–35 days from direct sowing; check by root size

When to plant

Plant during your local cool growing season. In colder regions, use spring or late-summer/fall sowings and allow enough growing time before hard freezes. South Florida outdoor window: October–March.

How to plant

  1. Prepare loose, well-drained soil or a clean seed-starting mix. Direct sow.
  2. Sow ¼ inch deep. Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Then water when the soil needs it, allowing excess water to drain.
  3. Thin or transplant to the listed final spacing. Give seedlings sufficient light and check moisture as roots establish.

How to harvest

Pull promptly at a useful size. Hot weather, water stress and waiting too long can make roots woody or overly sharp.

Aunt E’s tip: Sow a small row at a time and keep moisture even for a more useful harvest.

Growing notes and sources

Timing is a planning range, not a guaranteed harvest date. Temperature, moisture, variety and season affect the result. Count from the sowing or transplanting point stated above.
