$3.50

Crimson Forest bunching onions add red color at the base and fresh green tops to the kitchen garden. Use them like scallions.

Packet: approximately 50 seeds

Planting at a glance

  • Season: Cool to mild season
  • Start: Direct sow, or start transplants
  • Seed depth: ¼ inch
  • Germination: Usually 4–20 days around 70–75°F
  • Final spacing: Thin to about 2 inches for green onions; allow more room if growing larger clumps
  • Light: Full sun
  • Harvest planning: Typical crop window: 50–75 days from sowing for green onions

When to plant

Plant during your local cool growing season. In colder regions, use spring or late-summer/fall sowings and allow enough growing time before hard freezes. South Florida outdoor window: September–March.

How to plant

  1. Prepare loose, well-drained soil or a clean seed-starting mix. Direct sow, or start transplants.
  2. Sow ¼ inch deep. Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Then water when the soil needs it, allowing excess water to drain.
  3. Thin or transplant to the listed final spacing. Give seedlings sufficient light and check moisture as roots establish.

How to harvest

Pull tender plants or snip a modest amount of foliage while leaving an established base to regrow.

Aunt E’s tip: Harvest a few plants at a time so the rest can continue sizing up.

Growing notes and sources

Timing is a planning range, not a guaranteed harvest date. Temperature, moisture, variety and season affect the result. Count from the sowing or transplanting point stated above.
