- Harvest planning: Begin light leaf picking once plants are established and branching; larger cuts come later
When to plant
Plant outdoors after frost danger passes and the soil has warmed. In short-season areas, count back from your intended outdoor planting date for indoor starts.
How to plant
- Prepare loose, well-drained soil or a clean seed-starting mix. Start indoors about 6 weeks before transplanting, or direct sow in warm soil.
- Surface sow or cover only very lightly; light helps germination. Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Then water when the soil needs it, allowing excess water to drain.
- Thin or transplant to the listed final spacing. Give seedlings sufficient light and check moisture as roots establish.
How to harvest
Pick leafy tips above a pair of leaves. Leave enough growth for the plant to branch again.
Aunt E’s tip: Pinch out flower buds when leaves are your main crop.
Growing notes
Timing is a planning range, not a guaranteed harvest date. Temperature, moisture, variety and season affect the result. Count from the sowing or transplanting point stated above.
