Common Plantain Seeds
Common plantain is a low-growing leafy plant, not the banana-like cooking fruit. It forms broad leaves close to the ground.
Packet: 50 seeds
Planting at a glance
- Season: Perennial leafy herb
- Start: Direct sow or start a small labeled tray
- Seed depth: Surface sow and press in; keep seeds near the light
- Germination: Usually 14–28 days around 60–90°F; keep surface moisture steady
- Final spacing: Allow about 8 inches
- Light: Sun to partial shade
- Harvest planning: Pick a few young leaves only after plants are established
When to plant
Plant during your local cool growing season. In colder regions, use spring or late-summer/fall sowings and allow enough growing time before hard freezes.
How to plant
- Prepare loose, well-drained soil or a clean seed-starting mix. Direct sow or start a small labeled tray.
- Surface sow and press in; keep seeds near the light. Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Then water when the soil needs it, allowing excess water to drain.
- Thin or transplant to the listed final spacing. Give seedlings sufficient light and check moisture as roots establish.
How to harvest
Pick young outer leaves while leaving the central crown intact.
Aunt E’s tip: Remove unwanted flower spikes to keep this self-sowing herb within its planned patch.
Growing notes
Timing is a planning range, not a guaranteed harvest date. Temperature, moisture, variety and season affect the result. Count from the sowing or transplanting point stated above.
