Spring rapini, also called broccoli raab, grows leafy shoots and small flower buds with a pleasantly bitter bite.

Packet: 50 seeds

Planting at a glance

  • Season: Cool season
  • Start: Direct sow; avoid holding transplants too long
  • Seed depth: ¼–½ inch
  • Germination: Usually about 4–7 days in mild, moist conditions
  • Final spacing: Sow 1–2 inches apart, then thin to 4–6 inches; rows 18–24 inches apart
  • Light: Full sun
  • Harvest planning: A quick crop: begin checking tender stems and buds about 35–50 days from sowing

When to plant

Plant during your local cool growing season. In colder regions, use spring or late-summer/fall sowings and allow enough growing time before hard freezes.

How to plant

  1. Prepare loose, well-drained soil or a clean seed-starting mix. Direct sow; avoid holding transplants too long.
  2. Sow ¼–½ inch deep. Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Then water when the soil needs it, allowing excess water to drain.
  3. Thin or transplant to the listed final spacing. Give seedlings sufficient light and check moisture as roots establish.

How to harvest

Cut tender shoots with closed buds. Continue checking for new shoots instead of waiting for a large broccoli head.

Aunt E’s tip: Harvest before the yellow flowers open for the most tender stems.

Growing notes and sources

Timing is a planning range, not a guaranteed harvest date. Temperature, moisture, variety and season affect the result. Count from the sowing or transplanting point stated above.
