Planting at a glance

  • Season: Cool season
  • Start: Direct sow, or start small transplants about 3–4 weeks before planting out
  • Seed depth: ¼ inch
  • Germination: Usually about 4–7 days in a moist starting mix around 65–75°F
  • Final spacing: Allow about 6–12 inches for small rosettes, and up to 14–18 inches for larger mature plants
  • Light: Full sun
  • Harvest planning: Harvest baby leaves when usable; larger rosettes generally take about 40–60 days from sowing

When to plant

Plant during your local cool growing season. In colder regions, use spring or late-summer/fall sowings and allow enough growing time before hard freezes. In South Florida, use the cooler part of the September–April Chinese-cabbage window.

How to plant

  1. Prepare loose, well-drained soil or a clean seed-starting mix. Direct sow, or start small transplants about 3–4 weeks before planting out.
  2. Sow ¼ inch deep. Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Then water when the soil needs it, allowing excess water to drain.
  3. Thin or transplant to the listed final spacing. Give seedlings sufficient light and check moisture as roots establish.

How to harvest

Pick small outer leaves or cut a whole rosette at the base while leaves and stalks are tender.

Aunt E’s tip: Avoid leaving crowded transplants in their cells too long; stress can encourage early flowering.

Growing notes and sources

Timing is a planning range, not a guaranteed harvest date. Temperature, moisture, variety and season affect the result. Count from the sowing or transplanting point stated above.
