Planting at a glance

  • Season: Warm season
  • Start: Start indoors about 5–7 weeks before transplanting
  • Seed depth: ¼ inch
  • Germination: Usually 5–12 days; keep starting mix around 75–85°F
  • Final spacing: Allow about 18–36 inches per plant, according to growth habit; provide a suitable cage or trellis
  • Light: Full sun
  • Harvest planning: Typical crop window: 70–90 days from transplanting to ripe fruit; early varieties may begin sooner

When to plant

Plant outdoors after frost danger passes and the soil has warmed. In short-season areas, count back from your intended outdoor planting date for indoor starts. South Florida outdoor window: August–February.

How to plant

  1. Prepare loose, well-drained soil or a clean seed-starting mix. Start indoors about 5–7 weeks before transplanting.
  2. Sow ¼ inch deep. Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Then water when the soil needs it, allowing excess water to drain.
  3. Thin or transplant to the listed final spacing. Give seedlings sufficient light and check moisture as roots establish.

How to harvest

Pick fruit when its variety’s ripe color develops and it gives slightly to gentle pressure. Green-when-ripe varieties need their own color and softness cues.

Aunt E’s tip: Install support while plants are small so you do not damage a full root system later.

Growing notes and sources

Timing is a planning range, not a guaranteed harvest date. Temperature, moisture, variety and season affect the result. Count from the sowing or transplanting point stated above.
