Buab Liam is a climbing angled luffa with ridged fruit for cooking. Give the vine a sturdy trellis and pick fruit while it is young and tender.
Packet: 12 seeds
Planting at a glance
- Season: Warm season; vigorous climbing vine
- Start: Direct sow in warm soil, or start individual cells about 4–6 weeks before transplanting
- Seed depth: ½–1 inch
- Germination: Allow roughly 1–3 weeks in warm, moist mix; hard coats and cool conditions delay emergence
- Final spacing: Allow about 24–36 inches along a substantial trellis
- Light: Full sun
- Harvest planning: Pick young angled gourds when tender; do not wait for fibrous maturity
When to plant
Plant outdoors after frost danger passes and the soil has warmed. In short-season areas, count back from your intended outdoor planting date for indoor starts.
How to plant
- Prepare loose, well-drained soil or a clean seed-starting mix. Direct sow in warm soil, or start individual cells about 4–6 weeks before transplanting.
- Sow ½–1 inch deep. Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Then water when the soil needs it, allowing excess water to drain.
- Thin or transplant to the listed final spacing. Give seedlings sufficient light and check moisture as roots establish.
How to harvest
Pick young fruit before ridges and flesh become tough. Check vines frequently once fruit starts setting.
Aunt E’s tip: Build a sturdy trellis first; a mature luffa vine and its fruit are heavy.
Chinese okra is another name used for angled luffa. It grows on a climbing vine and is not ordinary okra.
Growing notes and sources
Timing is a planning range, not a guaranteed harvest date. Temperature, moisture, variety and season affect the result. Count from the sowing or transplanting point stated above.
