Meet Yaa Tashel, known as Mama Isis, of Mama Isis Farm and Market in New Orleans. In our Growfluencers interview, she shared how growing with her daughter led to a farm built around food, teaching, and community care.
“It all started with an avocado seed,” she told us.
A garden that makes room for learning
At the time of our conversation, she described growing in 16 raised beds under a caterpillar tunnel—a simple covered growing space. She also shared how she turns food scraps into resources for the soil.
Teaching children is a big part of the work. Her activities include games and acting out the movements of helpful insects. Those lessons give young people a way to learn with their whole bodies.
“I am most proud of the lives I have touched and the education I have provided to all ages, especially the babies,” she said.
Growing with the neighborhood
Her story includes trading mustard greens with nearby businesses, sharing growing lessons, and planning more space for community learning. A small garden can give people a place to begin—and someone to learn beside.
