65–75 days — Watermelon Seeds – Yellow Gem

Yellow Gem is a sweet heirloom watermelon variety with golden-yellow flesh that is crisp, juicy, and bursting with sugary flavor. The rind is thin and green with light striping, while the interior surprises with its bright, sunny hue. This variety is perfect for fresh eating, fruit salads, or juicing, offering a refreshing twist compared to standard red watermelons.

Originally cultivated for its unique color and taste, Yellow Gem has become a favorite among gardeners who want something both beautiful and delicious. It’s a heat-loving summer staple, producing reliable crops in warm climates, and thrives with plenty of space to sprawl.

Grow style:

  • Containers: Can be grown in large containers (20+ gallons) with trellising support, but yield is limited.
  • In-ground: Best performance in full sun with fertile, sandy loam and plenty of space for vines to spread.
  • Raised beds: Works well if beds are large and soil is well-drained and enriched with compost.
  • Hydroponics: Possible in large media beds with trellis training, but less common.
  • Small-space gardens: Feasible with vertical trellising or compact pruning, though fruits are fewer.
  • Prolific?: Yes, produces multiple 6–10 lb melons per plant when given proper space, heat, and care.

Sowing Instructions: Direct sow outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures reach 70°F. Plant seeds 1 inch deep, 3 feet apart in rows spaced 6–8 feet. For transplants, start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost and transplant carefully to avoid root disturbance. Provide consistent watering early in growth, then reduce as fruits ripen for the sweetest flavor.
