Variegated Collards — A Florida Heirloom With a Story
Cousin, these are more than pretty greens. Variegated Collards are a Florida family heirloom with a history traced to around 1910. Their green-and-white leaf patterns can become especially striking in cooler weather. Leaf color varies from plant to plant and with growing conditions, so no two gardens will look exactly alike.
Collards are part of Southern food traditions, and generations of Black farmers, gardeners, cooks, and seed keepers have helped carry those traditions forward. Saving seed is one way that growing knowledge and food heritage travel from one season to the next.
Grown and saved by Plant & Heal
We grew these collards for seed, kept the flowering plants isolated, harvested and stored the seed separately, and germination-tested and assigned a lot number to the seed crop. These are seeds from our own growing and seed-saving work—not just a story printed on a packet.
Growing basics
- Crop: Collards (Brassica oleracea, Acephala Group), an edible non-heading leafy green.
- Season: A cool-season crop; use your local Cooperative Extension planting calendar.
- Planting: Sow about ¼–½ inch deep in well-drained soil. Keep the seedbed evenly moist while seeds establish.
- Spacing: Give mature plants room; roughly 12–24 inches apart depending on growing method.
- Harvest: Pick outer leaves while leaving the growing center intact for continued growth.
- Color: Variegation can be more pronounced in cool weather; appearance varies.
Packet: 25 seeds. Germination test and lot information are maintained with the seed lot and labeled on the packet.
