100–110 days — Pumpkin Seeds – Sugar Pie
Sugar Pie is the classic heirloom pie pumpkin, producing sweet, fine-grained flesh that’s perfect for baking, roasting, and pureeing into smooth pies and soups. The fruits are small and round, averaging 6–8 inches across and 2–4 lbs each, making them ideal for family gardens and easy kitchen use
Grown for centuries, this variety is cherished for its dependable yields and excellent flavor. Its manageable size makes it easier to harvest, store, and cook with compared to larger pumpkins. Sugar Pie is also a favorite with homesteaders and market gardeners for reliable performance and traditional taste.
Grow style:
- Containers: Needs large containers (20+ gallons) with strong trellising if space is limited.
- In-ground: Thrives in fertile, well-drained soil with full sun; vines spread widely.
- Raised beds: Works if you allow vines to trail out of the bed or train vertically.
- Hydroponics: Rare but possible in large systems with extensive support.
- Small-space gardens: Manageable if vines are trellised or pruned.
- Prolific?: Yes; expect 3–5 fruits per plant, each 2–4 lbs, with attentive care.
Sowing Instructions: Direct sow outdoors after danger of frost when soil temperatures reach 70°F. Plant 1 inch deep, 2–3 seeds per hill, with hills spaced 3–4 feet apart in rows 6 feet apart. Thin to the strongest plant per hill once established. Provide consistent water and side-dress with compost or fertilizer during vine growth. Harvest when rinds are hard and fully colored.
