Quick grow facts: Bush-type watermelon

Cal Sweet Bush offers a more manageable vine habit, cousin, but a watermelon still needs sunshine and growing room.

Growing details

Cal Sweet Bush grows red-fleshed watermelons on unusually short vines. This 2019 All-America Selections winner is bred for compact growth.

Growing basics

  • Plant in full sun after frost danger passes and the soil warms.
  • Use soil that drains well and keep moisture even while plants grow.
  • Vines are about 14–18 inches long under trial conditions. Leave room for the fruit, too.
  • Use a roomy container with drainage if growing in a pot.

Fruit size and yield depend on care and weather. Compact vines still need full sun and steady water.

Packet: 8 seeds.
