The Importance of Black Women in Horticulture and Self-Sustainability

Greetings to all,
Welcome back to the Plant Something, Heal Something blog. As the proud owner of Gardening Under Influence LLC and Plant and Heal Co., I, Erica Plants, am thrilled to share insights into an area that I hold close to my heart – the significance of Black women in the realm of horticulture, small space growing, and self-sustainability.

Growing up, I was captivated by the resilience and beauty of nature. From the delicate petals of a flower to the potent herbs that healed, I found my calling. Today, as a Black woman entrepreneur, I am committed to sharing the knowledge I've gained, nurturing life skills, and fostering internal growth in my community.

Why is it important for Black women to be represented in this space? The answer is simple. We bring a unique perspective, rich history, and an innate connection to the earth that has been passed down through generations. Our involvement in horticulture is not just about growing plants; it's about reclaiming our roots, healing our communities, and fostering self-sustainability.

Small space growing is a testament to our resilience. It proves that you do not need vast acres of land to cultivate life. A small balcony, a windowsill, or even a tiny backyard can be transformed into a thriving garden. This practice not only promotes self-sustainability but also serves as a powerful tool for education and empowerment.

Teaching others about self-sustainability is a passion of mine. It's about equipping individuals with the skills to grow their food, create their medicines, and ultimately, take control of their health and wellbeing. It's about fostering a sense of independence and resilience that can be passed down through generations.

But this journey goes beyond external growth; it's also about internal growth. It's about cultivating self-love, patience, and resilience. It's about understanding that just like a seed, we too can grow and flourish, no matter how tough the conditions may be.

Through this blog, I aim to inspire, educate, and empower. I hope to create a space where Black women feel seen, heard, and valued. A space where we can share our experiences, learn from each other, and grow together.

So, join me as we delve deeper into the world of horticulture, explore the art of small space growing, and embark on a journey towards self-sustainability. Together, let's plant something, heal something, nurture life skills, and foster internal growth.
